Synopsis:

In this enthralling and atmospheric thriller, one young family's dream of a better life is about to become a nightmare.

Ben and Caroline Tierney and their two young boys are hoping to start over. Ben has hit a dead end with his new novel, Caroline has lost her banking job, and eight-year-old Charlie is being bullied at his Manhattan school.

When Ben inherits land in the village of Swannhaven, in a remote corner of upstate New York, the Tierneys believe it's just the break they need, and they leave behind all they know to restore a sprawling estate. But as Ben uncovers Swannhaven's chilling secrets and Charlie ventures deeper into the surrounding forest, strange things begin to happen. The Tierneys realize that their new home isn't the fresh start they needed . . . and that the village's haunting saga is far from over.

Review:

This tale within a tale is pure gothic mystery. This is a page turner once you sink your teeth into it. Stay with it after the first couple of chapters and you will be rewarded with a tale that will haunt you for days after you finish! It is a classic horror story, of the horror within, and what family truly means. While set in New York, the tale could have been set in the deep South, and been perfectly, eerily Southern goth. It would make an interesting movie, though I'm not sure it would capture all the subtle nuances of the tale. Though I have to admit, I was casting it in my head as I was reading it! It is hard to believe this is Duffy's FIRST novel. He is a new voice to be reckoned with in the horror/thriller genre! If you're looking for a horror book without all the gore and bloodshed, check out this book and rediscover how a great horror book will make you sleep with the light on!

  1. When I was much younger and had more time, I always loved to read thrillers and mysteries like this book. I think this one would definitely hold my interest.
