Creepy Crawlies and the Scientific Method cover

Synopsis:

From monarch butterflies to hissing cockroaches, Creepy Crawlies and the Scientific Method, Second Edition shows teachers and parents how to use bugs, insects and critters to teach children the five steps of the scientific method: question, hypothesis, methods, result, and conclusion. Focusing on fun as well as education, and operating on the premise that doing is learning, Creepy Crawlies offers more than 100 different activities which will ignite children's curiosity while also building foundations for critical thinking and scientific understanding. This classroom-tested collection of experiments is a perfect resource for teachers or just an afternoon of educational fun at home. The second edition includes updated content and four new insect species: the monarch butterfly, the black swallowtail butterfly, the bessbug, and the Madagascar hissing roach!

Review:

This book is aimed at grades 4-9, ages 10-14,. but there are many projects that Miss Grace can do at her age (8,grade 2/3), so I would say that it really is for your entire family! It is the PERFECT book for Summer, to get kids OUTSIDE and checking out their environment! We learned SO many things, like planting PARSLEY to attract Swallowtail butterflies. Who knew? And yes, we know have parsley planted among Miss Grace's Spring flowers AND we already have one cocoon! Miss Grace is thrilled that she can put it in her butterfly habitat and watch to see a butterfly emerge!

The book easily explains the scientific method to kids, in a way that is easy to understand AND set in motion. Which means this book can be the basis of your STEM Summer activities! AHA! The author presents all the scientific information in reference to her own family and their experiments, so you can see how easy it is to accomplish them at your own home. We've bookmarked at least 3 experiements for Summer and this is a book every home needs! It would also be an incredible resource for teachers to check out over the Summer, and to be able to implement some fo the activities during the school year as well. We highly recommend it!

  1. My niece is a true tomboy! Except for the fact that she loves to wear dresses, even at play. Yikes! But I digress. She is also a lover of all things creepy and crawly. Although I think this book is a little old for her, I think that it would be great for my sister to be able to help answer some of Abby's many, many questions. Thank you for the review and heads up about the book.
