Review:

Photography should be both a process of discovery and a procedure for recording that discovery.Form and content go hand in hand to produce a synthesis, an interesting work that engages both the viewer’s mind and emotions. We’ve all also seen photos that are technically superb but have no soul.

What John teaches the reader in this book is not only the best camera to buy, how to set it up, how to use tripods and filters, but also how to frame, and to use the available functions of your camera to tell a story of what you have discovered-in essence to bring out the soul of the picture. This book really helps you to elevate your nature and field photography to another level. john shows an amazing amount of pictures in the book, to help illustrate his points and show what can be achieved.

I was able to flip through the book right before we went on vacation to the coast, and was able to utilize some of John's concepts and methods, to get some pretty amazing photos, that honestly surprised even me! Even with Miss Grace in the pictures, nature (the waves and water) are a key focal point to telling the story of the photos. Neither need any narration- something you always want.

By allowing nature to give me the setting, I was able to compose correctly to get to the emotion. John's tips REALLY worked better than any other ones I have read. The book is so straight forward and easy to use. I really recommend that all new photographers start with it, and for those getting a new DSLR. John has some really great tips for Nikon users, especially, that will take your photography to new levels! I can't recommend this book enough, if you love photography and want to become a better photographer! Let your creativity shine this school season!
