Grin With Grace cover

Synopsis:

Have you ever felt the need to bite your tongue or grit your teeth? With humor and candor, popular women’s speaker Kathy Carlton Willis explores ways to smile in the face of adversity and challenging circumstances. Her go-to phrase Grin with Grace is the title of her latest book. She explores the word “grace” in Scripture, revealing how God’s grace blesses us and how it impacts our relationship with Him and with others.

Grin with Grace is part of the Grin With…Bible Study Series. This line of books is designed to help women on the run focus on a central theme. The “study, story and steps” formula helps readers assimilate new traits in small sections, all the while anticipating the next insight.
“You can never have too much of God’s grace,” says Kathy. “While writing this series, I dealt with multiple health issues, surgeries, cancer, and hospitalizations. At the same time, I moved to a different town, diving in to a new church ministry with my husband. Very little in life seemed familiar or comfortable. But God infused grace into each challenge and turned them into opportunities.” Kathy learned anew what the Bible means when it says:

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV)

Quote from Chapter 7, Grin with Grace

God’s grace strengthens us to live the lives He directs us to live. When we’re weak, gracemakes us strong through Christ. His grace is not frail; it’s power-packed.
– Kathy Carlton Willis

Review:

Grace. It's a word that gets bandied about, but is it really understood?

Our prior pastor made us understand how the Christian faith is really based on the entire concept of grace, and how that is not really taught to us, but we must learn through our adulthood. Miss Grace and I seem to discuss the concept more during the school year, when it comes to bullying situations, mean girls and friends who ignore you for an unknown reason. Kathy takes on this thought of what grace means, and shows in this superb bible study for women (that could really be used for any group) and shows us what true grace means, both in definition, modern usage and bible passages.

Each of the chapters gives us stories that are from real life, and Kathy shares her humor, honesty and insights about them (Grin with Grace section). Then Kathy finds applicable bible verses and shows how they fit the situation, and allows for the reader to write along as she shares them (Grow with Grace section). Kathy then offers life application actions and steps, to take you on your grace walk. You can pick one, or do them all, it is up to you (Go with Grace section). Kathy takes these steps and shows you what you can learn from them, and how to take that knowledge and share it with others- forwarding the grace if you will (Give with Grace section). Each chapter is then rounded out with a challenge scenario from Kathy. Must like a life example, the challenge is to help you to apply what you've learned, and to see what could happen if you make those choices (Grin with Grace Challenge).

This is an excellent method to introduce the concept of grace into your life, in a way that is SO easy to relate to. Kathy is always hilarious, and her real life "aha" moments (even the "oopsies"), really help the reader to know and understand grace in ALL its meanings and revelations. This is such a GREAT book to use as a seven week bible study curriculum, especially during the beginning of the school year. And with the upcoming DVD that will be an accompanying learning guide, to remind us all of what Christianity's grace really MEANS.

  1. What a lovely review, Nicole! You hit it on the head. Your title reflects what I've been thinking--this is MY Bible study for this fall! If my kids weren't grown, we'd be doing this together in our home-school.
