The set does come in a
convenient hinged travel tin, but I would recommend you rather use it as your desk holder, as it is a thinner tin, and without a strap to hold the pencils in place, they tens to move around a bit, which can cause you to loose your pencil points (as you can see form the pictured below). Evergreen is in the process of changing this feature, so hopefully by Fall, there will be a better way to transport them safely.

This new colored pencil set from Evergreen features premium lead & pigment, that allows you to go from soft, subtle strokes, to deep rich and vibrant marks. They allow you to lay down single color, blend colors easily and build layers flawlessly, much like when you use Copic markers! I do have to caution that these are not traditional color pencils, so you do have to lay down more color to get a stronger, brighter look, if you are not using their watercolor feature.
With their color color coordinated ends, it is easy to see what color you are selecting as well! That is actually a pet peeve of mine, not having the ends color coordinated, so I was thrilled to see this feature! My only complaint is that there is ONLY one yellow. I'm not quite sure WHY that is. Maybe if they made the set to 40, then there could be 3 or 4 yellows, to allow for the same shading that you have from the pinks, oranges, greens and blues.
As you can see, the pencils have an ergonomic triangle shape which means
they really are comfortable to hold, no matter how long you are using
them. Their soft core allows for smooth, bright color, while the thicker, water soluble lead and quality wood resists breakage. Which means you get color saturation that is really great!
This set really works well as standard colored pencils without water, as you can see in the first frame above. You can get a soft or darker color, by the amount of force, and tip use, that you color with. You can easily blend colors by just using the different shades-the softer core allows them to belnd quite easily into one another. You can take it up a notch by using a finger the self blend the colors after you lay them down, for a more muted effect. this works really well on scales, feathers and hair., as you can see in the first frame on the bottom above.
But then you can take you coloring up a notch by adding water! You can use water to lay down the color, or use it after you've laid it down, to get the subtle effects of a watercolor painting, as you can see in the last 2 frames above.
The difference CAN be striking as you can see above.
On the left you have blended colors (by hand and shading), and you have a nice seascape. But by adding water, you can see the subtle variations of color better in the shell, scales and background, and now the coral POPS. You also get the more muted, underwater effect for the overall picture.
Using these pencils can really up your coloring game! You can take what appears to be a ho-hum picture and really bring it to life and turn it into a piece of art.
