Well, since it IS Halloween, it only makes sense to have a murder mystery about the wicked, right?

love you dead cover

Synopsis:

LOVE YOU DEAD tells the story of Jodie Bentley, an ugly duckling as a child, that has two dreams in life - to be beautiful and rich. She's achieved the first with a little help from a plastic surgeon and now she's working hard on the second. Her philosophy on money is simple: you can either earn it or marry it. Marrying is easy, it's getting rid of the husband afterwards that's harder, that takes real skill. But hey, practice makes perfect . . .
Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is feeling the pressure from his superiors, his previous case is still giving him sleepless nights, there have been major developments with his missing wife Sandy, and an old adversary is back. But worse than all of this, he now believes a Black Widow is operating in his city. One with a venomous mind . . . and venomous skills. Soon Grace comes to the frightening realization that he may have underestimated just how dangerous this woman is.

Review:

This is the 12th book in the  Detective Superintendent Roy Grace series, and picks up after the events in You Are Dead. For fans of this series, they will delve into this book, and then maybe have to take a step back and ask, 'Wait, IS this a Roy Grace book?', whereas new readers will be sucked into the story of Jodie immediately and keep rapidly turning the pages. After 11 books, I imagine Peter needed to shake up the series a bit, and that he HAS done. I had to put the book down about half way in, and then pick it back up. By doing so, it gave me more of the sense of 2 books in one, and that helped to get me through the book. The story has all the twists and turns that you expect in a Peter James book, just not as expected in a typical Roy Grace series. If you want to check out a new take on an old favorite, be sure to check this one out!
