Cai Graham noticed there was an epidemic lack of love, understanding and respect between teenagers and their parents, when she started her photography business – so she set out to bring families back together. Her latest book, ‘The Teen Toolbox: Equipping Parents and Teenagers with the Tools for Navigating Adolescence’ is a powerful guide to doing exactly that.

Synopsis:

No one taught us how to manage the enormity of parenthood – or how to teach our kids to cope with their feelings – especially during the rocky stages of adolescence. The Teen Toolbox provides parents and teenagers with the tools to successfully navigate this vital stage of your relationship, while enabling you to enjoy, rather than endure, the journey. Inside this comprehensive parenting handbook, you will find:
* Pointers that will help you better connect with your teenage child
* Exercises that are teen-friendly and fast to implement
* Strategies to better communicate so you and your teen can talk more freely
* Insights into building better relationships with the whole family
* Techniques that will help you and your child overcome common issues If you're looking to reconnect, understand and relate with your teenager better, you need to read this book.

From the aauthor:

“I bring together practical advice from my experience as a therapist, NLP models and even grassroots strategies from motherhood, to help families recognize that love, understanding and respect are their three basic innate needs – before showing them ways to fulfill these desires and boost the strength of their relationship beyond anything they thought possible.”

Continuing, “The book also comes with an accompanying App (check the website for the link as well), which brings dozens of further resources into one dashboard. From online articles to YouTube videos, families can work through the book, scribble all over it, and then expand on what I teach, online. It’s extremely powerful.”

Review:

I pretty much will not read any 'help' books when it comes to kids, unless the author is a parent. If you haven't been there in the trenches, you really don't know what the 24/7 issues are. So I was happy to check out this book from Cai, as she is a parent, and survived the teen years!

This is a small book at only 195 pages, and thanks to its small paperback size, easy to take with you to read a chapter or two at a time. She hits on all the primary issues with teens: body image, peer pressure, stress, confusion/indepenedence, conlict, drugs and alcohol, social media, and confidence. AKA, all those area wher there is parent/child conflict on rules of behavior. SIGH. It seems undaunting when you look at them all in a row, doesn't it? But as we all know, you CAN survive your teen years, it's just  seems much harder these days. Cai gives some very good psychology models to base YOUR responses on, for when your child lashes out (or does nothing), and offers up checklists for warning signs. While some of what she says may seem like common sense (stop yelling and listen), it's the way she offers a different path of getting the same information, that is so helpful.

I would recommend if you have a child about to be a pre-teen, grab this book NOW. Many of the chapters you will need, especially about independence and peer pressure. It seems unreal to us, but the peer pressure is starting earlier and earlier as parents give 10 year olds cell phones and access to ALL social media apps. With this book, and the accompanying app (that has the same exercises as the book), you'll learn ways to avoid conflict and navigate the bomb maze of puberty!

Once her children were in Secondary School she set up her first passion based business as a family photographer. From her observation of families she noticed a modern-day epidemic of parents enduring their children instead of enjoying them and feeling overwhelmed navigating the trials of modern parenthood.
