Creation Illustrated is known for their Creation Illustrated nature magazine, whose goal is to "use Christ's method of teaching, through the things He made", and has been for 25 years! And now they also have unit studies that focus on different aspects of nature like bears, dragonflies, trees, and flowers.
Most of the nature unit studies are aimed at grades 3-8, so you can use them for your entire family! The subjects are ones that most kids find interesting, and because you are purchasing them as pdf downloads, you can print out multiple copi>es of the sheets if you need to.
The Snow Unit Study focuses on "the Intricacies of Snow for Grades 3-8 that will be sure to inspire students to look at snow in a whole new way! Students will gain an understanding of snow and how it impacts our lives along with the character-building lessons God intended".
Their are 11 sections in the study, including those I mentioned above, plus Writing and Penmanship, Math (!!) and Puzzles and Activities. This is a pretty good length for a unit study for this age level. We have used other unit studies that were aimed at middle to high schoolers, and this one is much more accessible (and FUN, per Miss Grace). As you can see, above, you get colored graphics and easy to complete fields. Your child starts off with Reading, with articles from the digital magazine, and then they view some great Educational Videos, that help to tie together the info from the magazine.
From their you have different sections, each relating to the readings and videos. Miss Grace actually really enjoyed the Bible Study (below) where she had to look up different bible verses and see HOW the word 'snow' was used, and whether it was in the physical 'snow' sense or a different definition. And speaking of, I LOVED how the Vocabulary & Spelling (above) section stretched her, with both shorter and LONG words, that she HAD to look up, as she wasn't able to give me an accurate definition! Yeah! As an only child, her vocabulary has always been richer, as she was around more adults, but I found this section to be perfect for her!
Miss Grace really liked learning some different things about snow, that she didn't know, and being able to pull some of the snow she has left (!!) from the freezer, really helped her to re-experience the wonder of it! I couldn't get a good picture with my camera, but she had a lot of dun looking at it under her microscope and seeing how the crystals still were individually different, just like how everyone of is made in god's image, but individually different! That is such a HUGE lesson to keep re-enforcing at this pre-teen age, when social media starts affecting their self-image! The Math and Geography sections she did not expect, but they helped her as we've starting end of the year review already in those sections! As she is a huge fan of word searches, the puzzle was like a treat for her as well.
Over all, we both were very pleased with how hands on the unit was. She liked the variety of work, which allowed her to do different pages on different days (she likes block scheduling), but keep the focus all week on all things SNOW. I liked how the unit study required her to use different resources to find her answers (something we will be focusing on next year!), and how each day helped to re-enforce what she had learned/studied the day before. For a kid living in southern Louisiana, she can tell SO much about snow now, that you would think she'd lived in Minnesota all her life! LOL You can work thought the unit studies at your own pace, by adding each page into her regular studies, Miss Grace completed it in a week and a half, only because we had a couple of off days in between. But I would say 2 weeks would be very comfortable for most kids, grades 5-8. Younger kids can use the unit, with some help. Though kids who like to complete units all at once, may finish them in less than a week.
