Synopsis:

Claire is a hardworking doctor living a simple, quiet life in London. She is also the daughter of the most notorious murder suspect in the country, though no one knows it.

Nearly thirty years ago, while Claire and her infant brother slept upstairs, a brutal crime was committed in her family's townhouse. Her father's car was found abandoned near the English Channel the next morning, with bloodstains on the front seat. Her mother insisted she'd seen him in the house that night, but his powerful, privileged friends maintained his innocence. The first lord accused of murder in more than a century, he has been missing ever since.

When the police tell Claire they've found her father, her carefully calibrated existence begins to fracture. She doesn't know if she's the daughter of a murderer or a wronged man, but Claire will soon learn how far she'll go to finally find the truth.

Review:

When there is a horrid crime, we all want to know about the SUSPECT, but what about the families of them? Those tend to get intense scrutiny, but then get left in the proverbial dust. This book picks up that them and asks, what if you were the daughter of such a suspect and had led a hidden life, but suddenly your lurid past comes back and threatens to dissolve your current?

Berry had down an incredible job of taking a simple idea and fleshing it out into a psychological thriller with some mystery thrown in. Will Claire's father find her and expose her? Will the press find out he's alive and come after her? Will Claire have any contact with her father?

How Berry unravels Claire, and Claire's life, is a tour de force. You WILL NOT see the edning coming, but after you finish the book, you will sit there and realize it makes sense, and was the only truly suitable ending that could have happened, that all else would have seemed wrong somehow. This will be a talked about Summer book, so don't miss it!
