Synopsis:

Kipp Brown, successful businessman and compulsive gambler, is having the worst run of luck of his life. He’s beginning to lose, big style. However, taking his teenage son, Mungo, to their club’s Saturday afternoon football match should have given him a welcome respite, if only for a few hours. But it's at the stadium where his nightmare begins. He takes his eye off his son for a few moments, and in that time, the boy disappears. Then he gets the terrifying message that someone has his child, and to get him back alive, Kipp will have to pay.

Defying instruction not to contact the  police, Kipp reluctantly does just that, and Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is brought in to investigate. At first it seems a straightforward case of kidnap. But rapidly Grace finds himself entering a dark, criminal underbelly of the city, where the rules are different and nothing is what it seems...

Complete with maps, a glossary, and fast-paced chapters, DEAD IF YOU DON’T will pique the interest of every crime procedural reader and satisfy everyone who loves to unravel a good mystery that’s full of true-to-life characters!

Review:

It's hard to make series feel fresh, but James has done it,  in this the 14th outing in the Det Grace series! In fact, this one is such a tangled roller coaster of a read, that I found myself reading it in one sitting, long into the night! What starts out as a simple outing at the football stadium with his son, turns Det Grace's life upside town for 3 days, as the day turns from one terror to another, and the case seems to have no leads, then too many false leads. And just when the team THINK they have it solved, there is a total turn around in the case, making them realize everything they knew was false! It's hard to keep up wth all the clues in this one, but Grace and his team are at their best, and kudos to James for livening up the series and giving us an amazing read. Don't miss this one!
