Synopsis:

This time Sheriff Joanna Brady may expect to see her maternity leave through to completion, but the world has other plans when a serial homicide case surfaces in her beloved Cochise County. Rather than staying home with her newborn and losing herself in the cold cases to be found in her father’s long unread diaries, Joanna instead finds herself overseeing a complex investigation involving multiple jurisdictions.
Filled with the beloved characters, small town charm, vivid history, intriguing mystery, and the scenic Arizona desert backdrop that have made the Joanna Brady series perennial bestsellers, this latest entry featuring the popular sheriff is sure to please J. A. Jance’s legion of fans.

Review:

Joanna's character is one that female readers can really relate to. She has a daughter in college, a 6 yr old son, and in this book her baby girl finally comes. And while Joanna wants to be home with her baby and enjoying her maternity leave, she loves her job and takes the commitment she made to the voters who put her in as sheriff seriously. So it's understandable that she starts chomping at the bit, so to speak, at 2 weeks off, and wanting to get back to work. Then when her deputies are at such a remote location that SAT phones won't even work, Joanna gets to come back on duty, even if it is in more of a support position. But she is a force to be reckoned with and when it seems like they won't get the help they need to find their serial killer, Joanna works her magic.

This book probably had the most humor in the series, and quite a few times I found myself laughing out loud. Jance gives you both sides of the coin- you get the victim's perspective/ plus the killer's, and then Joanna/her Assistant Sheriff's on the flip side. This gives the reader more info and helps to ratchet up the tension. the last 1/4 of the book is a roller coaster, so be prepared to not move til you get to the end! Jance knows how to keep the series always a delight, and even new readers will find this stand alone book highly enjoyable!
