When you’re a home-staying mommy with the army of 2 little kids and an always-hungry husband the least you can do is to learn how to cook on a budget.

Truth be told, keeping in mind the amount of food my boys can consume on a daily basis, there is not much room for me to manage a family budget by using leftovers as a budget-friendly option.

Luckily, there are lots of other tricks I learned and am pulling out my sleeve more or less every day. Read along if you want to find out something useful that will help you save a buck or two when preparing for a traditional Sunday dinner with your family.

Hunt For Discounts and Sales

As is the case with everything else, looking for vegetables or meat that’s currently on a discount plays a big role here also.
Lots of people stand behind the fact that if you want to save budget when cooking, you will need to plan your meals ahead. I can also second that.

However, this is only if your family can’t handle everything that you cooked. If you’re pretty sure that everything you prepared will be eaten that same night, you can rest easy and go to the supermarket without a clear plan what you’re going to be buying for an evening meal.

Adapting your menu based on groceries that are currently on sale is a good idea if you want to save money.

Finally, if you still want to plan everything ahead regardless of the discounts that you’re about to see in the supermarket, you can get a general idea of what to cook by taking a peek at our site’s recipes page.

Buy Groceries in Bulk

If you want to prepare roasted chicken for your Sunday dinner, it might be a better idea if you simply buy an actual whole chicken for it.

A freezer is your friend here, as you can always divide the chicken into what’s going to be prepared for the meal tonight while freezing the other part of it so you can prepare it at a later date.

Prepare Your Food Yourself

Buying pre-made meals and vegetables is a lot easier, we all know that.

And if you’re preparing the main meal yourself, you can at least buy canned food for a fill or ready-made salads, right? Wrong!

Buying and preparing everything on your own takes more of your time but it’s cheaper and arguably more delicious (if you know how to prepare it). For example, you can buy fresh beans from the flea market and prepare it the way your family loves to taste it, although buying and serving canned beans will also do it.

We can all agree that cooking for an entire family can take a lot of your time. But hey, as a stay-at-home military mommy time is the most precious thing that I do possess. And what is the best way to spend it than to cook for the ones that I love?

Dining together is definitely something that fosters the family bonds and it goes far beyond a simple family dinner.
