Joel lives in a nursing home and he’s not one bit happy about it. He hates being told when to eat, when to sleep, when to take his pills. He's fed up with the same routine every day, with playing by the rules, with the stilted weekly visits from his estranged daughter and grandchildren. He begins planning a way out when his new roommate, a retired soap opera actor named Frank, moves in and turns the nursing home community upside down.
Though the two men couldn't be more opposite, a fast friendship is formed when Frank is the only one who listens to and stands up for Joel. When he tells Frank about his burgeoning plan, they embark together on a mission to find the perfect escape, and along the way, will discover that it's never too late for new beginnings.

Filled with colorful characters, sparkling humor and deep emotion, The Great Unexpected is the story of friendship, finding oneself later in life, and experiencing newfound joy in the most unexpected places.

Review:

It is SO hard to believe that this is only Dan's second novel, and that writing has not been his career! This is a perfectly charming novel, that I ended up reading in one very late night sitting! I just could NOT put it down! Joel may be the definition of a curmundgeon, but he is endearing and your heart hurts for him. Then in comes Frank, who you immediately sense what secret he is hiding, but the author does a delft turn in allowing it to come out slowly (the better for Joel's benefit). When they finally make their escape you are rooting along with them, and as the story evolves you'll find yourself laughing and smiling, and even with the inevitable ending, you'll be charmed and sharing this book with everyone you know!
