Review:
Watching the screener of this movie at the kid's dance class, with headphones, may not have been the smartest thing to do- you tend to laugh and snort so loud, everybody wants to know what you;re watching and you end up having to stop and explain, over and over, and over....I swear it took me an extra hour to get through it- but in a good way!
I have only seen bits of Chonda's comedy here and there, but this film made me want to go find all the previous shows and watch them (good thing they're available in the giveaway below!) Chonda can take the mundane (dating thru widowhood and dating site hell for example) and turn it into a social commentary that will have you rolling on the floor! Seriously, if you can get thru her talk on how a red cardinal is supposed to mean your departed loved on is near you monologue without peeing on yourself form laughing so hard, you might NOT have a sense of humor!
But along the way she also interviews some amazing people and and lets them share how God has enriched their lives and how it felt to stand up for their beliefs (and still do). I loved this quote: "The bible is our edge to keep us from falling off the edge and hurting ourselves. It's intent is NOT to stifle us, but to give us parameters to be safe". Isn't that a GREAT way to explain the bible to your kids? Kids understand you give them rules and why, so making the bible the 'adult rules' just makes SENSE, doesn't it?
To say this film is empowering is very much an understatement. You may find yourself wanting to write down little pearls of wisdom, to take as your mantra to get thru your stressful weeks, especially if you homeschool! Like why the movie is called Unashamed: "the definition of unashamed is un shamed. Which is really all God wants you to be- NOT ashamed of who you ARE". Think on that for a minute. Yup. God isn't asking us to CHANGE, he's saying YOU are how I made YOU. pretty empowering, isn't it?
This is a movie to not only take your mother to, but also your sister and your besties. It's a celebration of womenhood, and how God can enrich our lives, if we allow him in. And along the way, you'll laugh yourself silly! And isn't that the BEST stress reliever of all?
