marked men cover

Synopsis:

A corpse is found in a Manchester canal, encased in a sleeping bag and weighed down by bricks. DC Sean Blake’s investigation has hardly begun before another body with links to it is discovered . . . also drowned. A mysterious figure seen asking questions about the victims becomes the prime suspect. But as Blake delves into the shady pasts of those killed, he finds connections to friends still living – including a crime lord of the city. Matters are complicated for Blake when those who once formed their childhood gang refuse to cooperate. With a killer so elusive and targets so unwilling to accept help, can Blake stop the body count from rising?

Review:

This is book 2 in the Sean Blake series (our secondary theme today, the first book was Loose Tongues). While I have read other books by the author, this was the first from this new series. This book takes on the concept of 6degrees of separation and looks at it from childhood- do we stay with the same crowd and can history repeat itself? But was their history to repeat back then or not?Loose threads and subtle links make this a late-night page turner, as you race to see if Blake can solve the mytsery before another death occurs!  Don't miss this new summer series for making you wish you were in London!

About the Author:

Chris Simms has worked in airports, nightclubs, post offices and telesales centres. Along with nominations for Crime Writer's Association Daggers and the Theakston's Crime Novel of the Year award for his novels and short stories, Chris was selected by Waterstone's as one of their '25 authors for the future'.

Chris says he is drawn to books that give insights into unusual minds. The twisted desires of Frederick in John Fowles', The Collector, the tormented thoughts of Scobie in Graham Greene's Heart of the Matter, the violent urges of Francie in Patrick McCabe's Butcher Boy - all are books that influenced Chris as a writer. The idea for his debut novel, Outside the White Lines, came to him in the early hours of the morning while broken down on the hard shoulder of the M40.

His series of DI Spicer novels - psychological thrillers set very firmly in Manchester - follow the police detective's fortunes as he pursues criminal and deadly individuals through the city's ever-changing landscape. In October 2012 Chris launched a new series starring DC Khan, a new recruit to Manchester police's Counter Terrorism Unit.
