And speaking of teens....

the incredible teenage brain cover

Synopsis:

An accessible, expert guide to the incredible potential of the teen brain from 3 psychologists.

The authors give practical tips and advice based on the very latest research that reappraises the adolescent years as an exciting and unique period of development, showing how we can best support teens' emotional, social and intellectual development.
Written by a team of leading clinical psychologists, this straightforward book walks the reader through the workings of the teenage brain. Pulling together the latest research, from brain imaging techniques to studies of teen behaviour, the authors provide an invaluable framework for parents, teachers and professionals to understand how teenagers learn.

Uniquely, the authors provide a manual with clear strategies for what to do to support teens based on findings from neuroscience and psychology. They show that good relationships and communication are the bedrocks of supporting teens to develop, learn and grow. They also highlight the importance of individual and learning differences, mental health, and a growth mindset, as part of the over-arching theoretical framework of the book. A must read for anyone supporting young people.

Review:

More than a how-to or psychology book, this book actually looks at the PHYSICAL changes in your preteen/teen's brain, as they start to go through puberty and WHY they act the way they do. It was sort of a shock to realize that it was just 'new parenting' at play, but actual SCIENCE behind why we need to parent teens DIFFERENTLY than BEFORE they hot puberty. Understanding just how much of their brain is controlled not only by emotion, but a primitive flight/fight response, really makes you understand WHY they tend to overact, produce drama out of nothing, and seem to suddenly resent parents and only listen to peers.

I actually found myself realizing just where I, and Miss Grace's dance teachers had gone wrong-how praise needs to be turned from 'great job' to 'you're improving, keep at it', to make her mind stretch and KEEP learning, rather than giving UP, thinking she was at her pinnacle. That is a HUGE different mindset for ALL of us. But already within a week of instituting it at home, I've seen tremendous gains in mindfulness and learning, where before she was giving me a brick wall. Sometimes even parents need to learn and this book, with its thorough explanations and examples gives parents just that- the means to be the change their kids need! I urge ALL parent of preteens and teens to get this book NOW, and change (for the good) the relationship you have with YOUR teens!
