Today I have 2 very interesting books to share with you- they're perfect for the entire family, but especially homeschooler teachers looking for great essay and research topics!

The Origin of Names, Words and Everything in Between coverThe Origin of Names, Words and Everything in Between
By Patrick Foote

With The Origin of Names, Words and Everything in Between, you can learn the origins of these names. From countries and cities to toys and animals to even planets, learn the etymology of interesting words in a fun and entertaining way.
Learn new things: Why is New York called New York? The Origin of Names, Words and Everything in Between has the answer for you. While author Patrick Foote, of the YouTube channel also called Name Explain, doesn’t claim to know everything, he has garnered a lot of knowledge about language over the years and he’s excited to get to share it with you in this new format.
Be entertained by education: Learning doesn’t have to be boring. With his fun sense of humor, Patrick explains each name with jokes and quips you’re bound to enjoy. Full of pictures and packed with great information, The Origin of Names, Words and Everything in Between has a variety of topics that are bound to intrigue anyone interested in the origins of the words we use every day.
Find fun facts: The Origin of Names, Words and Everything in Between is full of interesting facts that are great to keep in your mental pocket. You’ll be able to pull out fun information about words and language all the time, informing and amusing yourself and your friends for ages.

Review: Ever wonder why a fence is called a fence? In this amusing book you'll find out where the longest fence IS and some fun reasons about how we use fences. But you'll hit your head when you find out the word comes from the primary reason we have a fence" in deFENCE of your house and property. Yup- DUH! You'll find lots more like that- ones that make sense when you source the etymology (new word for the kids to look up!). But be warned, this book might just find your kid sprouting weird trivia facts AND trying to stump you (after all, you're NOT Google or Siri!). It would be fun for those boring road trips this holiday season too, as it covers places, animals, objects, words, food, games, and even companies!

Our second book continues looking at popular objects in more depth!

The Story Behind: The Extraordinary History Behind Ordinary Objects cover The Story Behind: The Extraordinary History Behind Ordinary Objects
By Emily Peck Prokop

Learn the fascinating history and trivia you never knew about things we use daily from the host of The StoryBehind podcast.
Everyday objects and major events in history: Every single thing that surrounds us has a story behind it. Many of us learn the history of humans and the major inventions that shaped our world. But what you may not have learned is the history of objects we surround ourselves with every day. You might not even know how the major events in history (World Wars, ancient civilizations, revolutions, etc.) influenced the inventions of things we use today.
The history and science behind the ordinary: From the creator of The Story Behind podcast comes this revelatory new book. The Story Behind will give insight into everyday objects we don’t think much about when we use them. Topics covered in the podcast will be examined in more detail along with many new fascinating topics. Learn how lollipops got started in Ancient Egypt, how podcasts were invented, and why Comic Sans was created. From food, fashion, and games to transit and modern technology, The Story Behind offers a closer look at the things closest to us.

Review: Much like the previous book, this one goes into more detailed info, as well as providing a Did You Know? Tidbit and TL:DR version of the high points for each object. For example, did you know that water guns have been around since BEFORE the Civil War?  That good ol' Abe Lincoln might have referenced them during the war? Yup- the basic idea of how they work hasn't changed, but they've changed how they look, since they got patented in 1896! Add in some interesting history and scientific facts, and you have a book your teens might just go off and hide with for an hour or two! Another great book for busting boredom!

So there you have it- 2 great books, that can start off a research paper, provide bon mots for a party, and help you win trivia night!

About the Authors:

Emily Prokop graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a degree in journalism and has worked in newspapers, magazines, and even as a puzzle editor, but always loved picking up random trivia and sharing it with her not-quite-as-enthused friends and coworkers. Luckily, she was able to combine her passions of trivia and podcasting when she created The Story Behind in 2016 and wrote the book based on the podcast in 2018. She lives in Connecticut with her husband, two kids, and two cats.

Patrick Foote was born in London in 1994 and raised on the south east coast of England. Although Patrick loved learning at school he felt the education system was never quite right or engaging enough for him, so much so he dropped out of university after three months! All this led to the creation of the YouTube channel Name Explain, of which Patrick is the sole researcher, writer, animator, editor, and host. The channel was created to delve into people’s curiosity and to get people learning in a fun and engaging way. In just over two years of existence Name Explain has amassed over 100,000 subscribers and over 10 Million views. When Patrick isn’t writing books or YouTube videos, he is normally playing video games, building Lego sets, watching professional wrestling, or looking after his pet tortoise Bowser.
