Celebrating the holidays with your kids is one of the most magical parts of being a parent. When they’re young, you can make the holidays the most joyful and looked-forward-to time of the year by decorating, taking them to see Santa, and -- of course -- providing gifts. But once they’re past the toddler stage, it’s time to start working crafts into the holiday schedule. Make memories that will last a lifetime with these fun and creative activities.

Personalized Stockings

Pre-decorated, store-bought stockings look nice, but working together to add your own decorations to a plain stocking is something you and your child will always remember. This project is perfect for young kids -- and super simple, too! Glitter glue pens are an easy way to write out names and add small, holiday-themed designs like candy canes and snowflakes. You can also purchase bells, bows, and mini ornaments for some added flair. Get your whole family involved, and even make some for the pets!

Homemade Holiday Greeting Cards

Your kids can express their artistic side by making their own holiday greeting cards to mail to friends and family this year. Start with a folded piece of construction paper and let their imaginations run wild! Cut out shapes to glue down like stars, Christmas trees, candy canes, and snowflakes, or get out the crayons and let them draw snowmen, reindeer, and other holiday favorites. If you’re short on time or materials, you can always start with store-bought greeting cards and decorate the inside.

Handmade Christmas Ornaments

Hanging up handmade ornaments always brings back memories of Christmases past. Popsicle sticks work best for these crafts. They can be glued together, painted, and adorned with googly eyes, puff balls, sequins, glitter, tiny bells, or other accents. Some classic ornament designs for kids include miniature Christmas trees, five- and six-pointed stars, the letter of their first name, snowflakes, and gift boxes. Give your kids some inspiration and see what they come up with!

DIY Garland

Making your own garland is as classic as making macaroni pictures, and there are plenty of ways to do it. Try the traditional popcorn threaded on a string if you’re okay with your garland only lasting for the season, or use circles made from construction paper for a longer-lasting craft. You could also go all-natural and create a garland made with pinecones, acorns, and sprigs of pine. Gather these items with your kids on a fun nature walk and then tie or hot glue them to some twine.

Sew a Christmas Tree Skirt

Learning to sew is a life skill that definitely comes in handy, and passing this skill on to your children can be fun for the whole family. Simple sewing crafts for beginners help little ones learn how to work a sewing machine and give them the practice they need to move onto more complex projects. To get into the holiday spirit, try sewing a Christmas tree skirt with a Dresden plate kit! This is a great starter craft for kids, and sewing supply stores often sell a variety of holiday-themed Dresden plate quilt kits that include pre-cut sections. All you need to do is line up the pieces and sew them together.

Make a Snowman

This is one project that every kid must do with their parents at some point in their life! Get outside and show them how to roll a big ol’ snowball for a snowman before adding the final touches like hats, boots, scarves, and a classic carrot or button for a nose. When you’re done, take photos with you, your kids, and the snowman for some evidence of this moment that won’t melt away.

No matter what crafts you decide to make with your kids this season, remember to cherish the time spent together and have a happy holiday!
