Calling all sleuths! Shout! Kids will bring the exciting, family-friendly animated tale Sherlock Holmes and the Great Escape to DVD and digital platforms on March 23. In this fun twist on a Sherlock Holmes tale, the main characters are animals, with Holmes as a dog, and Watson as a cat!

In the late 19th century, Mack, a heroic outlaw who stole from the rich to give to the poor, was loved and respected by the people. When the world’s greatest dog-tective, Sherlock Holmes, assisted in catching Mack, the people were angry with him for arresting their hero! But four years later, Mack has escaped from prison. While Sherlock is on the case to recapture Mack, he discovers the heartbreaking reason behind the outlaw’s escape, and decides to let him fulfill his final wish before Mack’s voluntary surrender to the police. However, everyone’s plans change when Mack’s daughter is kidnapped. Sherlock must employ all his wits if he is to rescue Mack’s daughter and save the day.

Review:

This is how my 14 yr old described the dvd, " It's anime that supposed to be aimed at kids and teens, but really it's for young kids". We sat down and watched the DVD together and I have to admit she's right. The much younger set will appreciate the anime style of cartoon and sarcastic remarks, whereas teens who are used to more sophisticated anime and a good story line, will quickly tune out and be bored with it. Honestly, even though I was reviewing it,I felt like the 5 minute storyline was being stretched to an hour, and there were quite a few places where it just dragged to nowhere, before picking up a good thread for a few minutes. Part of this is that it is a 'teaching' anime. And if you know anime, you know the 'teaching' is understood, not overt. But here the 'science' isn't just explained by Sherlock, there's animation to show it- it's like having an educational commercial break, nd it hampers the story line.

Now having said all that- YOUNGER kids, ie 5-7 age, will probably ADORE this DVD for its anime style, humor and good vs evil storyline. And there isn't anything to be worried about within its content that this age group hasn't seen before. Warning= there is a shooting near the end of the film (which does seem a bit out of context, but is part of the good vs evil imagery, and but no one dies. So you might want to be there for when youngest of kids view it, but the 8 yr olds will more like forensic science the scene and find it faulty. LOL. If you're looking for something fresh, that will keep the younger set occupied for awhile, and give some science education, this is the dvd for your family! And lucky you- we have multiple copies to giveaway!
