But Emily brings a different perspective to kids and art, and not only makes it SIMPLE for kids (and adults) to paint adorable drawings from DAY 1, Emily Lex makes it simple for their parents too!

It comes from her perspective:

Being an artist is about making art, yes, but also more. It is about seeing. ...It’s slowing down, paying attention, taking a breath, and noticing....It’s using our gifts and talents and passions to love and serve, each of us in our own creative way. Beauty matters. It brings peace and joy to our souls and reminds us that we are loved and God is good. "

Bet you never though of art as a way of serving God and his people, did you?

But I can tell you, this amazing art set helped Miss Grace to share God's grace with others, and they worked in the Beauty of his making at one of our local state parks recently. We were sent an amazing basket of goodies, including inspiration cards, watercolor books and even a stand for our pictures!

thoughts for today cards

It was an outing for teen girls in our homeschool area, to meet and make new friends. Ever try to herd cats? That's pretty much teens girls without direction! So we pulled out the Truth for Today cards from our review set and passed them around. Both the kid set and adult set have 31 cards, and each features a charming watercolor illustration, from Emily, along with an applicable bible quote. they're good for daily reminders, or for looking for inspiration, as the girls used them!

It didn't take long for inspiration to strike and for the girls to start sketching and painting. And the best part? They had a little bit of the bible setting the pace for their afternoon and filling their souls!

water color workbooks

From there they progressed to sharing the watercolor books. We were sent both the Animal Watercolor Workbook and Flowers Watercolor Workbook

They both feature 42 spiral bound pages, that not only lay flat, but are easy to remove pages from- Important if you want to share your work! Both have 10 easy beginner illustrations for you to copy. Emily has made it easy by lightly drawing the outline on the opposite page, so you can look at her original, but make it yours. The girls loved not having to sketch the base idea- it left them free to add background details of their own, and know the focus of the picture was "recognizable"(their words not mine, LOL). They did really well mixing colors to match the ones Emily recommends, and shows with the illustration. And as you can see, they did really well with matching colors and painting wildlife and flowers!

painting in workbooks

The books also feature blank pages for you to draw your own items. They all liked the layout of the book, b ut suggested the blank pages be at the back of the book instead, that way you weren't accidently painting on the back of an instruction page you haven't used yet. Plus they wanted to be able to keep those pages together as a reference book. Minor quibble, but a valid suggestion, none the less

We were also quite pleased with the little brass card stand too, when we got home! I was surprised at how well it held the page, and how 'weighty' it is, to keep your page from falling over! I would highly recommend buying it, when picking up the other items from Emily's shop!

After taking the

"Watercolor For Kids" by Simplified Class, we went back to our local park, and Miss Grace opted to use a page form the book (blank pages are provided), to make a picture of the scenery around us! I think she did an amazing job!

Besides the amazing basket of items, we were also given access to her great ONLINE Art classes! All of her classes feature video lessons, that you have unlimited playback on, so you can go back months after your first watched it, and remember a step you might have missed, or look for more inspiration! Plus you can pause and repeat whenever needed, while learning! SOOOO many online art classes don't offer those features! All of these classes are SOOOO worth the price- not only will they keep your kids from being bored over the Summer, you both can learn a craft that can turn into a hobby, and possibly even a business venture, if you decide to sell your prints!

Watercolor Class for Kids

Kids will enjoy learning techniques for mixing paint, caring for a brush, and stroke-making, then practice making happy art as they create watercolor projects that are cute enough to proudly display. There are 8 lessons that walk kids through the very basics, to learning technique, to making adorable mini projects! The videos show Emily working with a student, so the student can see how a child's illustration might different than an adults, and that it's ok for theirs to be DIFFERENT- as every image is as unique as it's maker! It's a subtle teaching, but it really helps! If your child does well with the class, they can easily move on into the adult class-as it's not really much harder, and it will help with their skills! Like Emily, I highly recommend upgraded paints and a simple watercolor set of brushes (both can be picked up at your local craft store, in the adult sections!)

Simplified Penmanship

This class is perfect for kids, especially teens, and adults alike! you will learn to improve your handwriting (no matter how terrible it is!) and develop your own lettering style. You'll finish the course feeling inspired to use your new skill to write notes, letters, and artwork every day. Featuring 10 lessons, plus 2 bonus ones, you'll make your own handwriting not only more unique, but be able to work on simple chalkboard writing, calligraphy and envelope projects with ease! This year's Christmas cards will standout from the crowd! Both of us really enjoyed this class, and Miss Grace is going to keep working with it over the summer, as thanks to her dysgraphia, her penmanship can use some more work!

Watercolor Class

This class features 10 lessons aimed at adults, that give you charming prints you'll want ot frame and put up in your home, or use for gift giving! She really does make it sooooo easy to look like you've been doing this for years! Like the Kid's class, she takes you through the basics, from selecting paints and brushes, to how to hold your brush for better technique and flow, and then practice, before starting projects, that you will feel you can tackle with ease! Plus you get a bonus lesson and 20 sketches you can download and use for more inspiration!

A great way to start the Summer off right would be to pick up a good set of watercolor paints and brushes, add the cards and books, and paid class(s) and hand them to your child on the first day of Summer, or at the first "I'm Bored!". Not only will they not be bored, you'll be amazed at what they can accomplish!
