Review
There is a LOT of good info in this small pocket size book! let's admit it, not every kid IS college bound- some just aren't up for the rigor college requires, BUT are smart and capable, and would benefit from finding something that excites them, and seeing how they can move into that field WITHOUT college. Tamera does a great job in showing the different ways kids can research different careers while still in high school AND get valuable job experience, while doing so. She then walks kids through ways to get their foot in the door, and even more important, how to present themselves to future employers (her interview questions and answer chapter is perfect!). This is a great book to get kids thinking outside the box, if that is THEIR career path!

and for the kids wanting to GO to college....

Get Real and Get In: How to Get Into the College of Your Dreams by Being Your Authentic Self by Dr. Aviva Legatt

get real and get in cover
An insider's college admissions guide that teaches students to identify and harness their unique passions, stand out from the crowd, and achieve their dreams.

Dr. Aviva Legatt has spent her career in higher education as a professor, counselor, and admissions officer in the Ivy League, and she wants to let students in on a secret: admissions offices are sick of seeing the same cookie-cutter applications. What were once considered best practices for “doing high school right” are now so commonplace that they have become a liability.

Get Real and Get In teaches readers to think outside of the box and focus on what admissions officers are really looking for―young people who dare to be their most authentic selves. Through engaging, accessible, and empathetic prose, this book forms an inspirational roadmap for readers to uncover their true passions and leverage them to create applications that truly stand out from the crowd. It also features a variety of useful exercises and candid stories from many influential figures, which teach students to look beyond just getting into a “good” college and focus more actively on identifying and attaining their long term goals.

Get Real and Get In is designed to ignite an essential mindset shift in students: stop trying to just “get in” and start figuring out exactly what you want from life and how to get it. Stop managing the impressions you make on admissions officers and start defying impressions. This is an essential guide to cutting through the noise of the admissions process and gaining the confidence to forge one’s own path to success―in college and beyond.

Review:

Like the previous book, this one starts with getting kids to THINK about what makes them happy, , and what their dream is. The key word is THEIRS- not their parents, not their girlfriend/boyfriend's, their besties. the author des a great job in remind teens that college will be about their experience, and what will help them in THEIR lives. that is such an important discussion, that teens stress so much over, and really needs to happen! Then it walks them through figuring out what they need to achieve that goal, and what the ENTIRE college experience at the school they're looking at is. It's not all about the degree, if you're whole time there is miserable and you get no LIFE experience! Best quote? "College is not Disney World- where your every wish is magically fulfilled!

From their the book goes into how you can make the application process fit- using info from interviews  and emails to/from your college pick, as part of your entrance essay, choosing. There is a lot of great info about being true to yourself during the admission process, and letting the college see what YOU have to offer them! There are also helpful tips on dealing with the stress and rejection- how to look beyond a NO and seeing what might be a silver lining. The second part of the book deals with what happens once you get INTO the college you picked. The focus is on the goals you have set for yourself, but also about experiences that help you achieve them.

Overall, it's 'a good book for teens AND parents to read- to help reduce the stress of picking a college and applying, and understanding the whys involved, to get the best experience for all!
