A darkly compelling debut of an unusual bond between two killers—
and the destruction left in their wake.
Synopsis:
A cold-blooded killer-for-hire, Edison North drifts across America from city to city, crime scene to crime scene, leaving behind a world in flames. But during a seemingly random stop at a fast food restaurant, Edison meets Christian, a young girl who mirrors his own sense of isolation and stink of "other." Though it's been a long time since he felt anything resembling a human connection, something about this desperately lonely child calls to him like a fallen nestling. Edison feels certain she deserves better. And while he is not convinced that he can give her that, he can teach her to fly on her own. So he takes her.
Thus begin the chronicles of Edison North—and his protégé. Weaving together past and present, Edison begins Christian's strange apprenticeship as Christian looks back upon her fractured upbringing and the training that made her into the killer she's become. What emerges is a savage—and ultimately tender—exploration of the unlikely bond between two outsiders: a fledgling assassin and the man who took her under his wing.

Review:
I still can NOT believe this is a debut novelist! The author does such an azmaing job, that you'd swear it was at least his third book! The book starts off with a scene that is pretty much every mother's worst nightmare- the kidnapping of her child from a crime scene from hell. But the mother in this case, doesn't even realize her child is missing and should have even been at the crime scene...So the question soon becomes to the reader, did the 'bad guy' actually do a 'good thing'?
That conflict of negatality is at the heart of the book. As time evolves and Christian decides to STAY with Edison, and soon learns everything he can teach her, the question flops back and forth. Edison is aware of this, as he narrates the book from his diary, and we get to see both his inner struggle, and the love and pride he has in Christian. But as time passes, and Christian becomes a young woman, the relationship changes, and after one horrible event, they are both on the run, and it's a question of who depends on who now.
This is a book that grabs you from the first scene and does NOT let you go, as you 'change sides' back and forth, as the characters change, until the shocker of the ending, that leaves you going back and rereading the last 2 chapters and wondering what truly comes next....DO NOT miss this book!
