Seems like an odd word, right?
Ekster is the Dutch word for Magpie, a deceptively smart bird with a penchant for collecting and hiding shiny things. In the spirit of the Magpie, they wanted to create classically attractive products with hidden tech to protect important everyday valuables, and thus, a brand name was found!
The idea behind the Ekster’s foundation was the fact that simple, everyday products, such as wallets, have significantly lacked innovation over the years. The design of products such as the common bi-fold wallet have gone unchallenged due to their widely accepted functionality. They wanted to create everyday use products which are tailored to the modern age, by incorporating the security and accessibility needs of today in a seamless way. That vision, and ideas,led to a successful start-up company, which was bootstrapped to its first crowdfunding campaign worth over 1 million dollars. A flock of Magpies is also known as a 'Parliament', which is what they named their flagship wallet model, and the one we were sent to check out!
The parliament is a premium leather smart wallet, perfect for slim storage and quick card access. The built-in aluminum cardholder fans out your cards at the click of a button (it can stores 12+ cards, but recommended storage is actually 9 cards for easier use) and thanks to its RFID blocking technology, also protects them against skimming. Add a tracker card to make it unlosable too! And you get a 12 month warranty- how many wallets have you had that on? Right, NONE!
The first thing you are struck by is the soft supple leather covering (which is available in 6 different colors, to meet the personality of the intended recipient). And your modern receivers will be thrilled to know that the leather is actually environmentally certified ECCO DriTan leather! Who knew?
It is super easy to use the wallet! it flips open easily and a simple push of the button, and your cards are accessible thanks to the always smooth quick card mechanism! And yes, they always fan out that way too! What we found with thicker chip cards, that was we could get 5 embossed cards in with no issue, and the 6th could make it a bit snug. Drivers license and ID can fit in the left pocket, and the interior money clip can hold folded bills.
It is much smaller than a traditional bifold wallet. What is missing is all the extra slots (for what you don't need anymore) and the picture pockets. Now for my dad (who was our tester), at first this seemed like a great idea, but he's nostalgic and preferred to have a couple of photos. But after a couple weeks of use, he really liked the wallet for its slimmer profile.
Now when you do put money in the clip, it can bulk up the profile some. Dad was a bit old fashioned and put some money in the inside pocket instead, and as you can see, had about the same bulk either way. BUT either way, was still MUCH smaller than a traditional bi-fold wallet! FYI, if you upgrade to the Senate model (or one of the metal ones), you get an exterior leather cash strap, that also keeps the wallet closed.

What we WISHED we had had back in October was the optional Tracker! Their solar-powered Tracker would have kept Dad from not being able to find his wallet, and loosing 50 years worth of pictures! ID and card can be replaced, those photos? Not so much! The tracker is slim and can be charged super fast: three hours of sunshine gives you two months of charge!!! And the Tracker is compatible with Google Assistant, Siri and Amazon Alexa, and you don’t even need a smart speaker to use this feature. Just use voice command on your app of choice, to locate the Tracker on a map! Easy peasy! We tested it with both Alexa and Google Assistance with NO issues! Dad really liked the two-way ringing feature, which lets you actually CALL your wallet with your phone- as that helped him find it in a jacket pocket easier, than the app did! The tracker slides easily into the back of the Parliament wallet, so it doesn't take up any interior space! Ladies- you can use a Tracker too in your wallet or purse too! In fact, you may want to get one for everybody on your Christmas list!! Plus if you purchase with a wallet, you get a discount!
