This book came in with perfect timing as my daughter will be doing American Government / Civics this year for high school. The book is perfect for her in that it starts off with a basic history lesson for that encompasses the information on what "join or die" means- hint it's from 1754. Also included is information on the American flag, the Pledge of Allegiance, why we use "In God We Trust", information on the Great Seal of the United States (both original and final designs) and then the Oath of Office for the President , Congress and Supreme Courts of the US. Finally you get a copy of the full Declaration of Independence, with all signatures, followed by a copy of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and the 10 amendments. Yup- this book packs a lot in before it event gets to the 230 quotes! Many of the quotes are simple, ie one sentence long - an example would be:

"Whoever should overthrow the liberty of a nation, must begin by subduing the freed freeness of speech "

"There is danger from all men, the only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public Liberty"

Others are a little longer, like:

"Yes we did produce a near perfect republic. But will they keep it? Or will they, in the enjoyment of plenty, lose the memory of freedom? Material abundance without character is the path to destruction" Thomas Jefferson

There are quotes from our pre-revolution days up through modern times. All the quotes speak to the Republic, patriotism and democratic government . If one is looking for a quick reference guide, this is definitely it and this should be a resource that every American has on their shelf! It would be great Christmas presents for those that are hard to buy for too!
