Synopsis:
Meet Detective Edison Kane. South End murder squad’s finest. Three months ago, his wife was killed on a night out. She wanted him there with her, but he always put work first. And the killer’s never been caught. Now he thinks he’s ready to be back at work . . .
Until a body washes up. On the godforsaken mudflats near Leigh-on-Sea. One look at the dead man’s face, and Kane feels himself start to unravel.
Where the eyes should be, there are only empty sockets.
Kane’s mobile pings with an anonymous message. Murder was so much easier than I thought. See no evil . . .
Everyone knows how that saying goes . . .
It’s up to Kane to stop the twisted killer, before they write their perfect ending.
But he couldn’t protect his wife — and can’t get justice for her now she’s dead and gone. Why should this case be any different?
THE SETTING
Southend-on-Sea, Essex is a classic British seaside resort, with pebbled beaches, garish amusements, fish and chip shops and the world’s longest pleasure pier. But the neighbouring coastal landscapes couldn’t be more different. To the west, the coast is dominated by shimmering mudflats, saltwater lagoons and an expansive sky. To the east, a labyrinth of creeks twist their way around brooding marshland and tidal islands.
MEET THE DETECTIVES
Tormented DI Edison Kane is a man with more demons than most. Relentlessly driven, he’s given everything to rise to the top of the Essex Police Force. Including his beloved wife Lizzy. He will always be haunted by the memory of the fateful night when she went out with workmates. Never to return. His deep sense of guilt at being unable to protect her fuels everything he does. Will it also be his undoing?
Rookie DC Bailey Granger triggers all of Kane’s protective instincts. But she’s tougher than she looks — and isn’t afraid to tell him so. A feisty single mum, Granger has flawless instincts and the work ethic to match. Nothing matters more to Granger than building a bright future for her beloved daughter Daisy. She won’t let anything stand in the way of that — not her humble origins or her questionable family ties.
Review:
So yes, we've all read police procedurals with detectives with 'issues' from trauma to family members, back after a prolonged leave, with a rookie to keep an eye on them. So why is this one any different? Because the rookie, really isn't one, she's just new to murder squad, and she doesn't take any gruff off anybody and she's not a snitch. But she is determined to stop the press from escalating a killer with an agenda, and she needs Kane's years of instinct and track record to do so. So she'll do everything she can to keep him on an even keel and helping her to get the murder solved, even if Kane thinks he's helping her. That's the twist- the main character doesn't realize he isn't the main character! It's a fast paced book that had me rapidly turning the pages, even after I thought I had it figured out to see howe Kane and Granger are going to catch the killer. Don't miss this start of a new series!
