Synopsis:
When Reverend Marcel Owen, a revered local church leader, is brutally murdered in his own church sacristy, DI Caren Waits finds her world spiralling into chaos. As she races to uncover the truth behind the shocking crime, she must also navigate the turmoil in her personal life.
Delving into Marcel’s life, Caren uncovers a complex tapestry of ambition, community service, and hidden rivalries. The investigation exposes deep-seated family disputes over a substantial inheritance, simmering jealousy among church colleagues, and long-cherished grievances within the congregation.
Just as she believes she is getting closer to the truth, a second murder disrupts her progress, intertwining the destinies of both victims and heightening the stakes of her quest for justice. Caren is forced to confront her own insecurities and the haunting shadows of her past.
Review:
This is the fourth novel in the DI Caren Waits series. As Caren is settling in to her new roll her dad is injured and she looses her child carer (her mum), so she hires and inhouse nanny. While adding to her working mother stress is how easily her son adapts and takes to the new nanny. But without her, Caren could never keep the odd hours she does. Having read the entire series, I feel like there is a bit of foreshadowing happening with the nanny (perhaps it will come out in book 5 or 6?), but really that is a bit part of the book, that focuses on the 2 murders at hand, and how they are linked and why someone wanted them both dead. In the middle of the investigation she has to deal with her husband's mistress demanding more money from his estate and the theme of not really knowing someone like you thought runs thru her personal life and the case. The team is getting along better and working as a whole, and it doesn't take them long to find the string that gives the final clue. Fast paced and works as a stand alone, but I recommend reading this series in correct order.
