One murder is just the beginning.

The Mumbles Town Murders cover

Synopsis:

When Detective Inspector Caren Waits is called to a grim Mumbles alley, she expects another routine case. Instead, she finds the body of Peter Brown, a celebrated barrister with a spotless public image—and a past steeped in secrets. A single clue, a Velvet Lantern nightclub matchbook, is all that connects his polished life to the squalid scene of his death.

As Caren digs deeper, the elegant façade of Swansea’s elite begins to crumble. Brown’s ruthless business deals, his fractured family, and his powerful friends all hide something dangerous. Then a second body appears—journalist Sophie Kirkwood, killed in the same chilling way.

Now, with the truth closing in, Caren must stop a killer driven by vengeance before another life is claimed. Gripping, atmospheric, and layered with moral tension, The Mumbles Town Murders is a darkly compelling crime thriller about revenge, corruption, and the thin line between justice and obsession.

Review:

Book 5 in the series is here already, and picks up after a little bit of time from the last book, Caren has finally settled the case with her deceased husband's mistress, and can now go forward with the purchase of her own home. She is ready to settle down and put down roots with her son. When a known attorney dies in suspicious circumstances with no clues to go on, she knows she will need her nanny even more, as she puts in long days to try to find an elusive killer. As they start looking through Brown's business dealings and family, they suddenly have too many motives and no evidence. And then suddenly with Sophie's death they have evidence but no motive...Trying to find the connection will be her team has to go over every piece of evidence and speak with everyone all over, to find the one thing they missed. A solid mystery, my only quibble still being the romantic relationship that seems out of character (single mom would be more worried about signing house papers, than going on a date for example)- I feel like there is a set up coming, so that is why the author is keeping it in, but it just bugs me, LOL. But overall a good entry into the series!
