Review:

As someone whose mother had a #NDE, and who has talked to others about NDEs they had, perhaps the book wasn't really a 'surprise' for me, as it may be for others who are unaware of the phenomenon. The book is a quick read and Gabe's experience I think was very much conditioned by his upbringing and morals. He was a normal person, who had a traumatic accident, he wasn't a 'bad seed' who totally turned his life around. I say this because I think some of his 'revelations' go back to the bible interpretations he had growing up. We know the bible was written at a time when women were thought as of more property than equals, and that type of cultural bias would not be expected by me in a conversation with God. Yet, for Gabe, some of that very much came through to him, and it felt like his known organized religious tenets were verified to him, although he said God hated what organized religions had become. I felt like the book read more as evangelizing to the reader, versus sharing what was told. For example, any point that was made would be backed up by multiple bible verses, but yet he didn't say he was setting out to prove the bible as accurate accounting of God's word. But had the book only focused in the actual conversation, it would have been very short, so I understand he felt the need to add them.

Do I believe that God's grace is fundamental, and that he died for our sins, so that we could be saved by that grace? Yes, because that is a common thread in NDE, that grace is given, and they are sent back to finish what they have started, or to do better. 

Perhaps it's just that Gabe's NDE was tailored more to him, to verify his beliefs and to bring him to evangelizing. Nothing wrong with that. Different people will take away different things from the book, again in keeping with their own religious tenets and faith. For those looking to know what happens at death, or unfamiliar with NDE, it could be comforting and thought provoking.
