Synopsis:

Sebastian Beauchamp is found savagely attacked in his own home – the assault is intimate and deeply personal. Someone wanted him to suffer.

As DS Malkie McCulloch investigates, Beauchamp’s polished surface quickly fractures. Beneath the charm and power lies a pattern of cruelty – and a trail of women whose lives he destroyed.

Then someone confesses. The case should be closed.

But Malkie isn’t buying it. The real truth is far more heartbreaking.

With his partner, DC Steph Lang, fighting to protect the career she’s given everything to, and a devastating new development in his mother’s unsolved murder pushing him towards a truth he may not be ready to face, this case will test everything he thinks he knows about guilt, innocence and the people caught between them.

Review:

This is book 5 in the series, and interesting in how role reversal happens with Malkie and Steph. Steph is having to take leave due to the issues from their previous case and it's not something that she particularly wants to do. And on the flip side Malkie is having to run the case at hand and try to trod with Steph's usual patience and tack, as hes dealing with the upper crust. though this time, its a case review, as Beauchamp's sister is adamant he was murdered. He's also beginning to realize that he has self-destructive behavior and that he has to change and the combination of the two is making him look at things differently. For this case that's a good thing and will help him try to figure out who actually wanted Beauchamp dead, and who thought they had killed him, but didnt actually. Then just as he's finally found the right solution for the case, ans while not a happy solution, its solved, he stumbles upon information that makes him realize what he thought was an unfortunate accident, might have actually been someone setting his mother's house on fire. With a lot of information to process, the next book ought to be very interesting indeed!
