It’s (almost) Halloween in Penstowan, and strange things are afoot…
Synopsis:
When a developer buys the abandoned convent and cottage hospital of St Ann’s on the edge of town, locals are aghast at his plans to turn the site into apartments. And when menacing voodoo-like dolls are found hidden inside the walls, it looks like the building’s past inhabitants are against it, too.
As the town prepares for the annual Bonfire Parade taking place on Halloween night, ex-police officer Jodie Parker finds herself in a world of witches and Wiccans, whispering voices and ghostly babies crying, as she tries to find out who’s behind the campaign to stop the development. Then one of the builders is found dead at the bottom of a staircase. Has a spectre from the convent’s past come back to take revenge on the living, or are Jodie and her husband, DCI Nathan Withers, looking for a killer of flesh and blood?
Review:
Jodi finds herself without a catering job for halloween, so she puts her efforts into helping out for the local parade. But she's not expecting is to be asked to rescue her mother from a protest scene at the building site at the new convent. She's also not expecting to get offered a case to find out why mysterious dolls are showing up inside the convent while the crews are working. As she finds out more about the history of the convent, she realizes there may be a lot more to the dolls and to the people that are trying to stop it from being rebuilt. Working with her husband as a consultant that is free of the rules of police work, she is able to find more information than they can. As they both come at the case from different angles, they soon find their suspect. This is an interesting book in the series and if you haven't read any of them it's a decent point just to get into it. The characters all have their moments within the book so that you get to know them and I believe that she's sitting things up for the potential next two or three books. A fun quick read, perfect for fall season

Fiona Leitch is a novelist and screenwriter with a chequered past. She’s written for footballing and motoring magazines, childbirth videos and mail order catalogues; DJ’ed at illegal raves in London, been told off by a children's TV presenter during a studio debate; and was the Australasian face of a series of TV commercials for a cleaning product. All of which has given her a thorough grounding in the ridiculous, and helped her to write funny stuff.
