Synopsis :
Agatha Raisin’s Cotswolds village is in an uproar when word spreads that their beloved Red Lion pub is set to close. The brewery that owns the building has raised the rent, ousting the pub’s owner so they can redevelop the space into apartments. As the villagers scramble to change the brewery’s mind, Agatha and her team at Raisin Investigations begin looking into more direct ways to save the pub.
Meanwhile, Sir Charles Fraith attempts to wheedle his way back into Agatha’s affection, crossing swords with James—Agatha’s other paramour—who is determined to thwart his efforts. As the two attempt to woo Agatha at a local reenactment of a 17th-century battle, Agatha has her sights set on something else. Amidst the chaos of the battle, a body is discovered in a copse of trees just off the battleground. While many brush off the death as an accident, Agatha digs deeper after discovering the dead man had connections to the same brewery putting the Red Lion out of business.
After an attempt is made on Agatha's life during a visit to the brewery, her investigation becomes all the more urgent. Can she find the murderer before becoming their next victim? And perhaps even more importantly for the village, can she find a way to save the Red Lion at the same time?
Review:
I have to admit I can't help but picturing this as the TV series. Blame it on binge watching all four years on acorn over a two week period, LOL, but I think it helps to picture the characters, as I actually really like the TV show, but I did not initially like Agatha in the books I had read. Seeing the show help to understand the character a little bit better and made the books more interesting. In this book Agatha's life is about to be chaos if her local pub shuts down, as she doesn't cook and that's a problem. She sets her investigation team on to trying to find the dirt to keep the brewery from shutting down the pub and ends up with half of them being invited to the owner's reenactment. When he actually falls from his horse after the main charge, only Agatha realizes something is wrong at first. As her team jumps into action trying to work with their favorite policeman, they soon realized there's more at play than just a simple murder. Agatha will need all of her investigative and negotiating skills for this mystery!
Just as a side note RW green is doing a great job taking over for MC. He truly has kept the characters as they were, with just a little bit of growth, as would normally happen. There's no huge change like sometimes happens. He truly understands Agatha and by taking ideas that MC had he just incorporates modern problems, like pubs closing, to update them. This is the 37th book in the series!
