Today I have 2 books dealing with GLP-1 usage for you- so many people are on them now- it might be you, a friend, a family member, a coworker- but for the most part the user needs to educate themselves, as they aren't given a whole lot of info on the drugs. So these book reviews are to help you, and help others, find their way!
Appetite on Pause: Weight Loss, Culture and the rise of GLP-1 Drugs by Tierra Duncan
Synopsis:
The Science, Trade-Offs, and Long-Term Questions Behind GLP-1 Weight-Loss Drugs
GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound have transformed the conversation around weight loss.
For many people, these medications reduce hunger, quiet food noise, and make weight loss feel possible for the first time. But beyond the dramatic before-and-after photos lies a more important question: What happens to your hormones, appetite, and overall health along the way?
In Appetite on Pause, health educator Tierra Duncan offers a balanced, evidence-based exploration of the science and culture behind GLP-1 drugs. This book moves past the hype and fear to help you understand how these medications work, what they may change in the body, and the trade-offs worth considering before starting—or while continuing—treatment.
Inside, you’ll learn:
- How GLP-1 medications affect appetite, cravings, and food noise.
- How the body adapts to weight loss and why those changes matter.
- Why body composition is about more than the number on the scale.
- Common side effects and important unanswered questions.
- What often happens when the medication is stopped.
Whether you are considering a GLP-1 medication, currently taking one, or trying to understand the broader implications, Appetite on Pause will help you ask better questions and make more informed decisions about your health—because weight loss is only part of the story.
Review:
I would call this a basic GLP-1 resource book-It's simple to read, the basics are covered, and it's a quick read. BUT having said that, I feel some things get left out (ie the issue of hair loss and how where your estrogen level is can greatly affect how and when it happens). I'm sure some of that is that thanks to reader forums, the data on GLP-1 is constantly changing and leading scientist to different studies, vs the reverse normally, so with print and editing, the book is correct, but there is a lot more to say. It's a good starting point to learn about GLP-1s, and good for giving to those thinking about getting on them.
Once you get on GLP-1s, your eating changes, and you need better recipes to help with protein intake, and this next book can help with that!
GLP-1 High Protein Cookbook by Marilyn Luis
Small plates. Plenty of protein.
A GLP-1 medicine, whether it's a weekly shot or a daily pill, turns down your appetite. What you do eat has to work harder: enough protein to help protect your muscle, gentle food for the days after a dose, and meals you still look forward to. This cookbook gives you 110 small-portion recipes built for exactly that, each with its own photo and full nutrition facts per serving.
Inside you will find:
- Protein you can see. The grams of protein are printed large on every recipe. 87 recipes have 20 grams or more per serving, and 40 have 30 grams or more.
- Small portions. Most recipes make two small servings, and every recipe has a "mini" portion for the days when a full plate is too much. 103 of the 110 recipes are 400 calories or less per serving.
- A photo and nutrition facts for every recipe. Calories, protein, carbs, fiber, sugars, fat, saturated fat, sodium and calcium per serving, calculated from USDA FoodData Central.
- Gentle meals for queasy days. Cool shakes and mild soups for nausea, fiber-rich sides for constipation and gentle dishes for reflux, each marked with a simple symbol.
- Pill-morning breakfasts. Make them the night before, and they are ready when the 30-minute wait after a morning pill is over.
- Food you actually crave. Tiramisu overnight oats, Marry Me chicken, shrimp saganaki, chocolate protein mousse and 106 more, with no added sugar.
- A 28-day meal plan built only from recipes in this book, with a shopping list for each week.
- Easy to cook. Everyday supermarket ingredients and no more than 25 minutes of hands-on time for any recipe.
Written for anyone on semaglutide or tirzepatide, by shot or by pill, who wants to eat well on a smaller appetite. Every nutrition figure is calculated, not guessed, and the health facts in the opening chapters are traced to their sources.
This book is for general information about food and cooking. Please talk with your doctor before you change your medicine or diet.
Recipe:
This recipe is perfect for summer into fall eating- you can chill the quinoa after it's cook, to make a cold salad, of serve warm. Plus it's amendable- you can add different veggies like red or yellow peppers, olives or cherry tomatoes!
Review:
Book 2 of GLP-1 Strong
Literally the BEST part of this book is the symbols! Having recipes made to help quash nausea, give you fiber you need, or help control reflux makes this cookbook your GLP's best friend! Knowing a recipe freezes well is your time saver too! The goal for most of us on GLPs is to get at least 20-30 servings of protein per meal. The good news is that ALL of these recipes give you at a minimum of 0, but all the entrees are over 30! So it makes it super easy to get the amount you need. A lot of the recipes are aimed at 2 servings- one for now, one for later or the next day. But that also means it's easy to double, if you're feeding a spouse or child too. Yes, many of the recipes will be familiar if you've been hunting GLP friendly recipes, but others may be a twist that helps break up the montony of the same meals (like a Japanese omelet, Mint Chocolate chip shake or Buffalo Chicken Stuffed Avocado). Her lighter twists are what make the recipes great- now you CAN have Swedish meatballs and gravy, and still have it fit your diet. You may find youself playing around with the recipes and mixing and matching, or using similar ingredient you have on hand, just remember to keep the proteins the same, to keep the high protein count Over all this is a good baseline cookbook for those on GLP1s, that delivers FLAVOR and high protein!
