Book Review/Blog Tour: Love is in the Air by Kim Wright

Hachette has sent me another interesting book to review: LOVE IN MID AIR by Kim Wright.

Premise: This is the story of a woman who meets a man on an airplane and, suddenly, is willing to risk everything: her safe but stale marriage, her seemingly perfect life in an affluent Southern suburb, and her position in her church. As Elyse embarks on a risky affair, and begins to change, her longtime friend Kelly and the other women in their book club, begin to question their own decisions about love, sex, marriage, and freedom. In the end it will take an extraordinary leap of faith for Elyse to find--and follow--her own path to happiness.

Review: This book was weird in a way to me- it actually is ABOUT 30-40 yr olds. WHAT a concept. It also takes a pretty blunt look at marriage after 5-10 years of 'bliss' and the reality of alot of marriages that are "coasting" on the norm and how the people in the marriage change to fit the concept of 'normal'.  When you think 'Chick Lit" you don't think about a book that deals with a whole lot of marriage counseling and the effects of an affair! I have to admit it took me longer to get through this book than I normally would have because of all the nuances and marriage truths that give the reader pause to think. I understand how and why the author ended the book, put I couldn't help feeling like the editor cut her down 50 pages, so she went back and recondensed things. the last 3 chapters just flowed differently to me. While I was not surprised by the ultimate ending, the author threw in some things that were surprising! The author has just announced there WILL be a sequel (yippee) so maybe those last chapters will get smoothed out some more!  I'm not sure how I would classify this book! I think it is a great read and really should be required reading for marriage counseling as it delves into issues that could be dealt with in the beginning so that the issues won't happen later. This is definitely an interesting read and I recommend it to anyone who is married!

A little about Kim Wright:
Favorite authors: Tom Perrotta, Joseph Conrad, Jane Austen, Alice Munro.
Career arc: From food, wine, and travel journalist to first-time novelist.
Author's toughest challenge: “When I got divorced, women started flagging me down in the supermarket and darkly muttering about their own discontents. I became the person it was okay to confess to. The challenge was to write about topics like affairs, divorce, midlife questioning, and suburban angst without slipping into clichés.”
Publisher's pitch: "Think of Kim's writing as a cross between Tom Perrotta and Allison Pearson. Her characters are so realistically depicted that it makes for addictive reading.”

the Book's Opening lines: “I wasn't meant to sit beside him. It was a fluke. It's the last Sunday in August and I'm in Phoenix for a pottery show. I won a prize for my glazing and sold seventeen pieces, so I'm feeling good. On the morning I'm due to fly out, I go for an early hike in a canyon behind my hotel.”
