A couple of days ago I spoke to you about Pampers and their Little Miracle Mission Pay It Forward campaign.
Pampers sent us a $50 American Express Gift Card and encouraged our family to "Pay It Forward" to someone in our community. Timing is everything. One of the teachers at Kiddo's school had a house fire a couple of days before I was contacted for the campaign, and lost EVERYTHING. Kiddo's school is small and like a small community unto itself, as most church based private schools are. Kiddo came home from school and told me about the house fire and how we needed to help. Waa-la. The school has decided to host a "restock the house" shower for the teacher, as she has a house she can stay at, but nothing to put in it. So we took Kiddo shopping with a list of items that the teacher needed and assembled items for a gift basket, plus.
This picture is from the first shopping trip- they were out of some items, so I will have to go to another store, in a different town to get them. We spent the $50 on bakeware, a set of knives, pantry items, a can opener, and spices (you really don't think about those, but they are expensive and sometimes you just need a pinch!). I will be adding some cookbooks (something else you don't think about- but we all learned after Katrina- take Momma's cookbook WITH you when you evacuate- it is something you can NOT replace!) and kitchen towels. I am also going to be adding some decor items for her kitchen that I am working on, and decorating the basket, so it can be used in her kitchen, all part of our personal donation. Unfortunately I didn't have time to get it all done before time for this post! I promise I will show you a photo before her shower!
When you loose everything from a fire (or tornado) it is not like a hurricane. There is NO time to gather what means the most to you, the family mementos that you treasure, to take with you. The suddenness and the loss is what most victims grieve for.. If we can help as a community to rebuild what she had, it may not be the same, but it will be comforting in it's familiarity. We thank Pampers for allowing us to go above and beyond in Paying It Forward to her.
What can YOU do to help someone in YOUR community?

There are several families in my community who are struggling to get back on their feet after the recent tornados. I'd go out and purchase some necessities for them! I know I can stretch that gift card with my coupons!!

My friend is age 30 and about 2 years ago- she had one eye removed due to cancer. She just had a baby who is 2 months old. She just found out-she- my friend who is only 30 years old NOW has liver and spleen cancer. They are having a benefit to help her out this weekend. My heart just cries for her and her family. I would give the card to her or buy her plenty of diapers at walgreens with coupon matchups to get ALOT for her baby. I know 50.00 cant do alot but I want to take the financial stress off of her someone-so she can be with her baby before she starts taking chemo and is too sick to enjoy her sweet baby.
ReplyDeletea couple of months ago, our Son developed a wound on his L arm. It developed an abcess quickly & by the time he called me for advice (we live 5 1/2 hrs away!) it sounded infected so I told him to go to the local ER... to make along story short he had developed the "Flesh-eating virus" and had to have multiple surgeries, almost losing his arm. He has been unable to work & is undergoing rehab to bring him back to health. He has a wife & 2 toddlers - and they are struggling! This $50 would REALLY make a big difference in their lives, becasue they are having to do without alot right now.... and we don't hear ANY complaining! ((1955nursehjc4me(at)myway(dot)com)) Thanks!
ReplyDeleteto pay it forward- my friend who is a new mom and totally stressed out..i would purchase food from grocery and then proceed to cook freezable cakes, desserts, pies, you name it. nothing like a homemade treat to get new moms through the first days home!! anashct [at] yahoo [dot] com
ReplyDeleteI heard from news some of communities in our state suffer from flood, local shelters and hospitals can use all the help they can get. I'd like to get food, baby items and blankets to donate.

My idea is to use the $50 to buy diapers and wipes to donate to those moms who lost their homes in the tornadoes recently.

I would use the $50.00 to buy newborn baby clothes for a young single mom who is choosing to keep her baby instead of having an abortion. I would donate it directly to the privately funded program called Baby Love in my city that aids unwed mothers. I would ask that it be donated to the young mother most in need of it.

Well, I think I would like to take the $50 and turn it into $100 or more worth of food (using coupons etc) and donate it to our church food pantry. Good way to at least double our money :)
ReplyDeleteps - thanks for stopping by my blog :)

I participate in a local charity that helps unwed mothers. They have been in existence for over 100 years. They recently released their "Immediate Needs" list, which requests enfamil, detangling spray, antibacterial soap, hairbrushes, etc.

4 years ago my best friend's son was diagnosed with leukemia. 6 months after her son was diagnosed, her husband was diagnosed with lung cancer. Greg and his Dad had to make many trips over two mountain passes through rain, snow, sleet and sun. Greg has been getting better. Sadly his Dad lost his battle with cancer on 1.18.2010. Shelley is now a widow and raising her two children by herself and still having to help Greg with his cancer. I would be thrilled to buy them a care package to let them know that they are still loved very much and that I think of them everyday.
