Life Cycle of a Butterfly Craft

This craft is a super fun way to explain the life cycle of a butterfly to young children. I like to incorporate Eric Carl’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar as a I explain the butterfly’s life cycle.

Materials:
  • red paper plate
  • hole punch
  • yarn
  • green construction paper
  • brown construction paper
  • white construction paper
  • black construction paper
  • tiny pom pom’s
  • markers
Getting ready:
There is a little prep work for this craft. On the green construction paper draw a caterpillar and leaf. Draw a cocoon on the brown construction paper. The white construction paper is used to draw a butterfly. On the black construction paper draw the body of the butterfly with a white crayon. Punch four holes around the plate and two holes in the middle. Cut five pieces of yarn (they do not have to be the same length).

Instructions:
If you are incorporating The Very Hungry Caterpillar read the story before you begin the craft.
  • Draw a spiral on the red paper plate and cut on the line.
  • Punch holes around the spiral and in the center of the plate.(kids love to us the hole punch)
  • Cut out leaf and glue tiny pom poms on the leaf.
  • Cut out the caterpillar.
  • Cut out the cocoon.
  • Cut out the butterfly wings and body. Glue the body of the butterfly onto the wings. Decorate the butterfly.
  • Punch holes in the leaf, caterpillar, cocoon and butterfly.
  • Tie the leaf, caterpillar, cocoon and butterfly to the plate with yarn. Make sure to tie them in the order of the life cycle. Tie the last piece of yarn in the center.

I love the way the spiral cut plate falls and shows the life cycle of a butterfly!
