As you know already, we LOVE how Drive Thru History® can make what seems like boring history come alive for students!! So when we had the chance to check out one of their bible studies, Drive Thru History® "Acts to Revelation" we were all eager to check out the set!
This new special edition set of Drive Thru History® "Acts to Revelation" features 18 episodes on 3 disks, for a FULL 495 minutes of bible based adventures, featuring our Drive Thru History® host Dave Stotts, as he leaves American history behind and travels to the Middle East and explores it and the Mediterranean region, using the book of Acts as a guide to the area, to discover the people and places that made up the 'roadmap' that became the foundation of our Christian faith. Besides the 3 DVDs, you get a full color study guide, as part of the disc holder, so it can't be lost or mislaid (if you have kids, you know exactly what happens to dvd 'inserts', LOL). The study guide replaces the online study/discussion guides, you may be used to from the other series. The 124 page booklet includes discussion questions and extra content, like photos and readings. In full color, it is a joy to look at, and the discussion questions correspond very well to the videos, and really allow you to check to see if your student learned the material, and how it relates to the bible. in fact, you could use this for both at home and church bible study use!
Each of the episodes lasts about 30 minutes, so it is quite easy to take on 3 per week, or if you're using it in conjunction with an early history class, you may want to go slower, to match the episodes to the historical study. There is nothing like your kids actually SEEING the area where Peter and James traveled in Israel, where Timothy and Paul traveled in Mediterranean (including Cypress and Turkey), or understanding the people of the islands of Patmos and Greece, as how they are now, and were then! By giving your child a feel for the ENTIRE realm, it helps to break your student free from seeing the bible as set in a 'far off' land, and puts it square where it needs to be for them- as a historical fact.

If you don't want to watch the videos in order, you don't have to. A concise summary for each of the videos, included in the Guide, offers help in deciding which videos you want to watch. Miss Grace, being OCD, naturally wanted to watch them in order. And while she was not assigned to watch the entire set, but 1 or 2 videos per week, as her bible study, she actually DID get through the entire set, as "they were just too interesting, so I just let them keep on running, til I finished the DVD". Now having said that, we did have to go back and review a tad, as when we went over the discussion questions, she sometimes forgot info from episode 1 or 2, but after a quick reminder, then she was able to tell me everything that Dave had seen and talked about. (Did I mention she might think Dave has "the coolest job"? LOL). But overall I wasn't surprised at how well she liked the DVD set, as she likes the format of learning about the bible in historical context, with the little asides and explanations that Dave offers, to really help students understand the context and time period. This was a good study for her, after her Confirmation Class I ended, as it reviewed some of the topics they had discussed, and talked about others that will be coming up in her second class.
Overall I would say this series is perfect for Middle Schoolers on up. While younger siblings may get some learning from it, it is aimed at a more adult level, and there may be topics they haven't really brushed on yet, so they could be a bit lost. It's perfect for both home study with your own family and teens, or as part of your homeschool bible curriculum, thanks to it's cross curriculum aspects (history, geography, vocabulary and Latin!). It could easily be incorporated into a church bible study program for Youths OR Adults, as a study of Acts, and each episode shown before class teaching and discussion. And if you DO use it for teaching, you might want to consider getting the additional map, that shows all the areas, cities and countries, he visits in the series, to help tie it all in visually, for Geography.
